Choose Contains in the WyoBiz search
The Wyoming Secretary of State Business Division provides the official WyoBiz business search. Its Filing Name field opens with Starts With selected. For name checks, the agency’s company-name guide recommends Contains so you can compare names containing the wording you enter.
- Enter the distinctive wording in Filing Name. Leave out the LLC ending and words such as “the,” “and,” or “a” when preparing the search.
- Select Contains. Leave Filing ID empty when investigating a new name idea; that field is for an existing entity’s assigned identifier.
- Click Search and read the completed result. Search singular and plural forms separately, too.

The example above searched Juniper Lantern and returned “NO RESULTS FOUND.” That tells you what this query found at the time of capture. Wyoming’s naming rules still apply to the complete filing name.
If the page stays on Loading or asks for human verification, the search has not supplied a result. Complete the verification or try again before drawing a conclusion.
Read the name and status on each matching row
A Contains search can return names with extra words or characters around your search text. In the XYZ example, the results include 007 XYZ INC. and 1XYZ LLC. Read the complete names before deciding which ones need closer comparison.

Each row shows an entity type, filing identifier, Status, Standing - Tax, Standing - RA, and filing date. Those fields describe the returned record. They do not give a yes-or-no decision on your proposed name.
The list includes both Active and Inactive records. An Inactive label alone is not enough to decide whether you can use that name. If a close match appears, ask the Business Division about that record before relying on its status.
Changing the ending does not make the name different
Wyoming’s LLC naming rule, W.S. § 17-29-108, uses the distinguishability standard in § 17-16-401. Section 17-16-401(f) identifies five kinds of differences that do not distinguish a name in the state’s records:
- Entity-type words and abbreviations, such as company, incorporated, and limited liability company.
- Adding or removing “the,” “and,” or “a,” including their symbols.
- Punctuation and special characters.
- Capitalization.
- Singular and plural forms of words.
Compare the remaining letters and numerals, including their order. A change that distinguishes a name under this test must still meet the other LLC naming requirements, including the rule concerning trademarks and service marks registered in Wyoming.
The complete LLC name also needs an allowed ending. Section 17-29-108 lists LLC, L.L.C., limited liability company, limited company, LC, L.C., and specified shortened forms. Low-profit LLCs have separate naming requirements, including L3C; that is not an interchangeable ending for an ordinary LLC.
In the Naming Desk, choosing an ending changes the filing-name presentation saved or copied with your candidate. It does not rerun the name check.
Use the LLC reservation form if you need to hold the name
The Application for Reservation of Name lists a $60 fee and a 120-day reservation period. It also says a separate reservation is not required if you are submitting Articles of Organization at the same time.
If you need the reservation, use the complete proposed name, including its LLC ending. Follow the form’s mailing instructions; the form cannot be submitted by email.
